Golden Gate OCI Native is Available

The Golden Gate (GG) Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) Native Service is now GA. It’s a big milestone in the consolidation of Oracle’s Golden Gate offerings. Previously there were some hybrid models with GGCS and GG on Marketplace, but this brings GG as a Native OCI Service with all the advantages of OCI and GG.

I will show how to provision a GG instance and Access the Console!

All the information is available here.

Create a Golden Gate Instance

There is a new menu item in your Oracle Cloud Tenancy.

Golden Gate Console

The access to the console can only be done via a Bastion Host.

We can do this in 2 different ways:

  • SSH tunnel to a VM running in the same VCN
  • Access the URL in a Windows Machine running in the same VCN

I choose the second option, and after struggling with all the IE security options preventing me from downloading a proper browser (the hardest part in this whole process), I managed to open the GG console using Firefox.

Database Registration

We do need to register Databases, otherwise there is no point in having a GG service 🙂

The following databases are certified to work with OCI GoldenGate as a source or target:

  • Oracle Databases 11.2.0.4, 12.1.0.2, and higher
  • Oracle Exadata
  • Oracle ExadataCS
  • Oracle Autonomous Transaction Processing
  • Oracle Autonomous Data Warehouse

“A database registration creates a private connection between the OCI GoldenGate service tenancy VCN and your tenancy VCN. When you register a database, you provide the database’s IP network location and a fully-qualified domain name (FQDN) that OCI GoldenGate uses to reference the database. After creating a database registration, it becomes available to all OCI GoldenGate deployments within that compartment.”

Conclusion

The highly anticipated GG OCI Native Service is here, and it will bring the best of both worlds – Cloud and GG. While it does not offer yet all the capabilities of the on prem service, that gap will be shorter moving forward. At the moment it will be the perfect solution for customers using Oracle DB’s in the Cloud and OnPrem.
